New York crime strategist tapped to lead Newark police

The man who helped establish New York’s Compstat criminal data-collection system, a model for similar systems nationwide, has been selected as the director of the Newark, N.J., Police Department.

The man who helped establish New York’s Compstat criminal data-collection system, a model for similar systems nationwide, has been selected as the director of the Newark, N.J., Police Department. Garry McCarthy has been with the New York Police Department for 25 years and deputy commissioner of operations for seven years, according to The New York Times. He comes to Newark at a time when that department is struggling with rising crime rates.
