Pavement sensor tracks precipitation

Spectro DSC111 sensor identifies and distinguishes between water, snow, ice, slush, and frost on roadway surface, before precipitation becomes a driving hazard. One sensor covers range of 6 to about 49 ft., while providing measurements in real time. Non-invasive operation requires no cuts in road surface. Instead, install sensor on a 10- to 30-ft.-high post, along roadside. Works through infrared optics and eye-safe laser technology. Helps road crews identify prevailing driving conditions to take remedial action, as well as maintain walkways or garage slopes. Also provides pavement information to guide adjustment of weather-adaptable speed limits or initiate automatic de-icer spraying equipment.
