A new report from the Alexandria, Va.-based Water Environment Federation (WEF) and other organizations outlines the legal and policy framework surrounding security at the nation’s drinking water and wastewater facilities. The report, “Protecting the Water Sector from Security Threats,” updates legal and policy changes made since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Topics addressed by the publication include the duty of utilities to the public and employees regarding preparing for and responding to terrorist and man-made disasters, employee background checks, and balancing the public’s right to know with the need to keep some information confidential. “The legal aspects of water security are constantly evolving, and WEF and our partner organizations hope water and wastewater utility executives, managers and operators will find this publication helpful,” said WEF Executive Director Bill Bertera.
