Tahlequah, Okla., officials hope that an arrangement with surrounding Cherokee County will allow them to close the troubled city jail and house municipal prisoners in a new county facility. The city is willing to pay $33 a day for the county to house its prisoners in the new county jail rather than pay $80,000 more to continue to operate its own aging jail, according to Tulsa World. Cherokee County Sheriff Norman Fisher says he would prefer to wait about a year to see how the new jail runs before taking on additional prisoners.
