Nine months ago, Exelon Nuclear executives, under fire for failing to promptly report a radiation leak into groundwater near Godley, Ill., promised to pay for the town’s new water system. This week, the company announced that it has placed $11.5 million in escrow to pay for the system, though the council is still deciding between two systems, according to the Chicago Tribune. Radioactive tritium spilled from the company’s Braidwood Generating Station last year, and though the spill had almost no public health risk, tests conducted at the time showed that some private wells in the city were contaminated with E. coli and other biological pollutants. The company agreed to pay for the water system as a sign of good faith because it did not tell the public earlier about the tritium spill.
