Massachusetts retains consultants from controversial Big Dig firm

Engineers with the company that designed Boston’s troubled Big Dig project continue to work as consultants for the state, despite Gov. Mitt Romney’s attack on the company following a fatal ceiling collapse in a Big Dig tunnel. Romney’s Transportation Secretary John Cogliano approved $8 million to extend a contract with Bechtel/Parsons Brinckerhoff last month, according to The Boston Globe. Also, five engineers from the company have been working on repairing the tunnel where the ceiling collapsed in July, killing a female motorist, despite orders from Romney that nobody from the company be involved with the repair work. Cogliano says he didn’t know the engineers were involved in the tunnel repair, and adds that he extended the contract on the advice of a state engineer.
