The creation of land records, such as tax mapping, remains the most common application of geographic information system (GIS) technology, according to a report released last month by the Aurora, Colo.-based Geospatial Information & Technology Association (GITA). The 2008 Geospatial Technology Report covers the latest trends in GIS and related technologies in the private and public sector.

Part of the report, available at http://www.gita.org/, includes Top 10 lists of GIS applications and geospatial technologies for 2007. It also lists the top three issues of the year — data quality control, integrity and maintenance; data sharing; and system integration.

This is the fourth year that the report included the private sector. City and county government officials made up 72 percent of the participants in the study, with federal and other public sector officials making up the remainder.
