Kansas DOT crews tackle sinkhole mystery
Officials with the Kansas Department of Transportation hope a 10-day project will solve the mystery of a sinkhole that has been devouring a 35-foot-long section of a state highway for years. Crews have been refilling the hole and repaving the road, K-15, but have never been able to find out why it is sinking, according to the Wichita Eagle. Air pockets formed by an improperly capped oil well could be the cause, or it could be that salt deposits are being dissolved by groundwater.
