Several elderly and disabled residents of Fort Collins, Colo., are outraged at the city’s plan to cut back its “Dial-A-Ride” service, saying they rely on it for rides to the doctor and to friends. City officials say the program, expected to take 2,500 people on 92,000 trips this year, far exceeds federal standards, and by cutting back on routes they can save $600,000 to help balance the city’s budget, according to the Denver Post. Under the proposed plan, only residents who live within three-quarters of a mile from a city bus route would be eligible for Dial-A-Ride service, excluding 415 current clients.
