A lawsuit against the California Department of Transportation is the latest in a series of efforts by the national handicapped community to make city sidewalks more accessible to people in wheelchairs and the blind. Advocates for the handicapped say too many states and local governments are not complying with federal laws mandating things like level pavement, wheelchair ramps at curbs and crosswalk warnings for the vision-impaired, according to the Los Angeles Times. However, California state officials say hundreds of miles of sidewalks and crosswalks would have to be upgraded in that state alone, work that could cost approximately $2.5 billion.
