NAFA, the non-profit association for fleet professionals, will hold its annual Institute and Expo (I&E) in Orlando, Fla., April 14-17. The four-day event, designed by fleet managers, delivers information, ideas and updates on the latest in fleet management.

The event includes a large expo hall, fleet management sessions, educational workshops organized by track, as well as networking opportunities. More than 250 product and service exhibitors will have displays at the expo hall. Other highlights:

•    Ride and Drive--Law enforcement fleet managers and municipal associates can test their skills behind the wheel at the LEG Ride & Drive test track.

•    Keynote speaker--Motivational speaker Shawn Achor will open the I&E conference. He will present his philosophy of positive psychology, whereby one's relationship to the world is dependent on that person’s viewpoint of it.

•    Fleet Excellence Awards--The NAFA “FLEXY” Awards are industry awards recognizing outstanding individuals, teams or fleets.

•    CAFM Boot Camp—CAFM (Certified Automotive Fleet Manager) Boot Camp will be taking place on site at I&E for students to prepare for certification exams or to be introduced to the CAFM program. Boot Camp is an intense forum where certification students can get face-to-face instruction on some of the more difficult concepts in the course materials. The Boot Camp is targeted to help increase students’ study power for the exams, while making candidates knowledgeable about fleet management. The program gives candidates an opportunity to test-drive the Boot Camp program.

The I&E conference has many sessions of interest to government fleet managers, including:

--Selling Change and Innovation in Government and Corporate Fleets

Change is inevitable in every fleet operation. Selling this change and the impact of that change is the more daunting task. The session will be a panel discussion of fleet professionals and government contract experts that will explore steps these fleet professionals took to sell change in their operations. Some of the areas that will be covered: obstacles to change to anticipate within the organization: in the shop, in other departments and with senior leadership and elected officials; what happens once a decision is made; innovations and agents of change with outsourcing and in-sourcing; and use of government cooperative contracts.

--Law Enforcement Vehicles: Get Charged Up!

Learn from OEM engineers and subject matter experts the theory and operation of charging systems for law enforcement vehicles. The repair and replacement of charging system components and what “looks like it should fit” and “the same alternator is cheaper at the local parts house” may not always be the best solution. Learn how to properly care for the service battery to obtain the maximum lifecycle. While this session is law enforcement-specific, it is also applicable to any fleet with heavy use electrical systems, such as emergency medical units, public works vehicles, and public utility fleets.

--Emerging Controversial Issues and Their Impact on Your Fleet

What’s on your radar? The legalization of marijuana is here. Have you considered the impact this will have on your fleet? Does your policy address other emerging issues, such as the right to carry? Are you prepared for new technology? Think driverless cars or computers in glasses and dashboards. This session will cover these and other topics. What are you doing about it? Come and learn about emerging issues and new technologies that can affect fleet safety and policy.
