Although the audio recordings on the Shelby County, Tenn., Register of Deeds' Web site are sometimes difficult to understand, they provide a unique glimpse into the events following Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination 38 years ago. Joined by photos of the crime scene, mug shots of assassin James Earl Ray, a 64-page homicide report and court records, one of the 99 audio clips details the police activity immediately following King's shooting at 6 p.m. on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. The documents were posted this year to commemorate the anniversary of King's death the evening before he planned to march with striking city sanitation workers.
