Vehicles that run on alternative fuel — such as biodiesel, hydrogen, ethanol, compressed natural gas, or gas/electric hybrids — are becoming popular choices for city and county fleet managers. A new survey of 50 cities by SustainLane.com finds that some cities are well ahead of others in “greening” their fleets. Las Vegas tops the SustainLane list with 63 percent of its fleet comprised of vehicles powered by alternative fuels. B20 biodiesel is the most common fuel for Vegas' fleet, powering 450 vehicles, followed by compressed natural gas, electric hybrids and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Denver, No. 6 on the list, may take the lead in the next survey because city officials recently announced plans to convert 100 percent of the city's fleet to alternative fuels by the end of 2007.
