The Washington-based National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) kicked off its Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program a year ago to provide, oversee and assist with physical exams for firefighters, as well as to educate fire department members on healthy lifestyles. NVFC's aggressive goal is to reduce on-duty, heart-related deaths by 25 percent by 2008. The group already has provided thousands of firefighters with a Heart-Healthy Firefighter Kit, which includes information about fighting cholesterol and heart disease, and promoting better nutrition and physical fitness.
