When removing paint and preparing surfaces for a fresh coat, crews must use caution in handling potentially hazardous materials, protecting the environment and ensuring their own health and safety. For those reasons, The Pittsburgh-based Society for Protective Coatings has compiled standards, guides and other documents in a 322-page book titled “Guides on Environmental Protection.” The book features the latest instructions for containing debris when removing paint, disposing of lead-contaminated debris and providing ventilation to control emissions and enhance visibility within a contained area.
