In some communities, the oldest form of transportation — walking — could also be the most dangerous. Traffic congestion, unmarked crosswalks and a lack of sidewalks in some areas contribute to pedestrian injuries or fatalities. To help planners assess their pedestrian environment, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created a guide for the Georgia Department of Transportation. While the “Georgia Guidebook for Pedestrian Planning” covers laws and policies specific to the Peach State, it also includes general information on how to choose projects using a pedestrian deficiency index and how to improve driver education.
