The U.S. Interstate Highway System turns 50 years old in June, and to celebrate, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has launched a Web site that collects residents' stories about traveling. Former Vice President Al Gore contributed comments to the site about his father, Tennessee Sen. Albert Gore, who was the principal sponsor of the legislation that established the interstate system in 1956. Former Nashville Mayor Richard Fulton, who recalls traveling before the highways were built, and Dolly Parton, who writes about the highway improvements she has witnessed, also are among the notable contributors. TDOT is inviting everyone with a story to share about the early days of the interstates to e-mail interstate.50@state.tn.us. To view the Web site, visit www.tninterstate50.com.
