Oakland, Calif., in conjunction with Chicago-based Quixote, recently launched a “Smart Parking” program at the Rockridge Bay Area Rapid Transit Authority (BART) District station that informs commuters how many parking spaces currently are available. Of the approximately 270 total spaces, 53 have been designated as “smart” spots. Detectors monitor the number of vehicles entering and leaving the station parking lot and then send the number of spaces to electronic signs located on nearby Highway 24. Commuters can secure a space for the day by phone or Internet either in advance or upon arrival. The reservations are sent to BART police via personal digital assistant.
