Most pet owners in Los Angeles will now be required to spay or neuter their dogs or cats by the time the animals are four months old. Officials hope the new law will reduce the number of animals that are euthanized at the city's animal shelter.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa signed the ordinance at a ceremony with former “Price is Right” host turned animal rights advocate Bob Barker in attendance. Pet owners who fail to comply with the new law could be fined up to $500 or sentenced to 40 hours of community service.
