Patrol and rescue boat guards waters around Lady Liberty
The U.S. Park Police recently purchased a 44-ft. Dauntless Class vessel to patrol New York Harbor around the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and surrounding waters. Crews will rely on the boat to expedite search-and-rescue or diving missions, as well as conduct surveillance operations to ensure port security and combat potential terrorism. Made of welded aluminum, the boat features a deep-vee variable deadrise hull, which produces a smooth, dry, and stable ride. Also maintains fast response and easy maneuverability in any weather condition. Recessed aft cockpit aids in diving, recovery, and towing operations, as well as in boarding other vessels. Runs on twin Cummins diesel engines, each rated at 580 hp. Additional amenities include a 10-Kw. generator, VHF/FM radio, chart plotter, radar equipment, and an infrared system for nighttime operations. Central heating and air conditioning provide all-season comfort for crew members. Dauntless boats have also been ordered by the U.S. Navy to enhance port security at naval installations worldwide. In addition, many state and municipal law-enforcement agencies are using the vessels for patrol duties.
