The Community
As Colorado’s fourth largest city, just west of Denver, Lakewood is the gateway to the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Lakewood, incorporated in 1969, is a home-rule City with a Council/Manager form of government. The City Council consists of the Mayor, who is elected at-large, and ten City Council members, two from each of the City’s five geographical wards. The Council appoints the City Manager with administrative responsibility to carry out the Council's policies and the day-to-day operations of the City. The Position
Plan, organize, direct and control engineering services of the City through an organizational culture of technical competence, service, cooperation, problem solving, and practical innovation. Ensure high quality coordination with other City divisions and departments. Major services include: Provide a straightforward process for engineering review, building plan review, permit issuance, and inspection of land development and building permitting. Manage financial and engineering aspects of stormwater, sewer and water utilities. Design and construction management of transportation, stormwater, sewer and water projects including managing relationships with Colorado Department of Transportation, Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, metropolitan districts and other entities. Cooperate oversight of light rail construction with Regional Transportation District (RTD) for the West Corridor beginning in 2008 and ending in 2013. Negotiating long term agreements with entities such as RTD, metropolitan districts and other governmental entities. Resolve engineering, building and land development issues and maintain strong credibility with staff, consultants, developers, contractors, citizens, other divisions and departments, Planning Commission, City Council and external agencies. Such credibility is maintained, in part, by providing accurate timely information. Determine public improvement requirements associated with land development. Guide the planning, design and construction of improvement projects that are safe, cost effective, good quality, low maintenance and timely with consideration of the interests of affected property owners and City-wide goals. Select, supervise, develop, encourage and support section heads (Senior Principal Civil Engineer, Lead Development Review Engineer, Building Codes Administrator, Construction Coordinator and Permit Counter Supervisor) and other employees.

The Candidate
The City seeks a candidate with Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or similar educational accomplishment. Five years progressively increasing responsibility in municipal engineering. Three years successful supervisory experience that includes supervision of full-time staff. Both private and public sector experience preferred. Professional Engineer license from the State of Colorado without further examination and within six months of hire. Valid driver’s license and good driving record. A background check is required.

Hours of work are regular business hours with occasional evenings and weekends.
