Safety Tiles Make Streetscape Installation ADA-Compliant
Step-Safe precast polymer concrete tactile dome safety tiles installed on pedestrian ramps for its College St. Streetscape Project enabled the City of Asheville, NC, to meet ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines for detectable warning surfaces. To install the tiles, the crew first made a plywood template to match the 2-ft. by 8-ft. size of the tile pattern. After pouring and bull floating concrete, the crew placed the template board into and level with the concrete and scraped away excess at the edges. After the concrete set firm enough to work, the crew replaced the board with the tile and pressed it into the cavity to bond with the concrete. For the final step, the crew rubbed and smoothed edges around the set tile. Step-Safe tiles are resistant to wear, weather, and corrosion. Exposed coarse angular sand on the back side creates a strong bond with fresh concrete or exterior-grade tile mortars. Available in 6 skid-resistant colors: bright white, safety yellow, forest green, chocolate brown, charcoal gray, and brick red. Castek, Inc., A Transpo Industries Co., New Rochelle, NY
