Mayor McCheese of McDonaldland inaugurated in Washington days before Donald Trump

Donald Trump isn’t the only civic leader getting inaugurated in Washington this week.

The esteemed and longtime mayor of McDonaldland, Mayor McCheese, assumed the duties of McDonaldland President in Washington on Tuesday, according to LA Weekly

McCheese has enjoyed an illustrious political career leading McDonaldland as mayor since starting the post – and his existence in McDonalds advertising — in 1971, according to Death and Taxes Magazine. His time as mayor of McDonaldland saw the installation of singing and dancing trash cans, and the repeated punishing of notorious criminals such as The Hamburglar, Captain Crook and Grimace.

McCheese even scored one newspaper endorsement in the 2016 U.S. presidential election from the University of Wisconsin’s Badger Herald. While the Badger Herald acknowledged McCheese’s 1973 loss of a copyright infringement trial to H.R. Pufnstuf for similar looks, the newspaper called it “merely a dent on his record.”

“For the people who complain there hasn’t been enough discussion of climate change, Mayor McCheese is your answer,” the Badger Herald's endorsement reads. “He has been extremely outspoken about sustaining the apple pie trees and where he stands on the thick shake volcano pipeline.”

McCheese inauguration organizer and stand-up comic Ian Abramson was able to get members of the Los Angeles comedy scene to participate in the ceremony, according to LA Weekly. He was quick to note the uncanny resemblance between McCheese and Trump.

“There’s no way to trust what’s real and what’s not, there’s a legacy of real lawsuits for both of them and the fictional character has literally as much political experience as the real human Donald Trump,” he told LA Weekly.

Nevertheless, Abramson has said he hopes to give a political situation fraught with negativity a lighthearted spin with the McCheese inauguration. “With all of the frustration of the election, a lot of real fear, a lot of asking like, ‘What is our role and our responsibility?’ this is kind of what I know how to do,” Abramson said.
