Declining birth rates, rising death rates and the exodus of young people are shrinking the population of Nebraska’s rural counties. A report from the Omaha-based Center for Public Affairs Research showed that half of the counties in the state have higher death rates than birth rates, in most of the counties the population is over 65 years old and the population of three urban counties is greater than the rest of the state, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. The director of the center says those counties could feel pressure because there won’t be enough young people to support the older population.
