The residents of Corvallis, Ore., voted down the city’s plan to tax cell phones in a Tuesday referendum. Officials say the tax was needed to make up for a decline in the city’s telephone franchise tax that results from residents switching to cell phones instead of land lines, according to the Albany Democrat-Herald. Telecommunication companies and other opponents of the tax raised $100,000 to fight it, while supporters raised $8,300.
