Three rural New York towns are at the center of a fight between state and federal authorities over the proposed construction of a 190-mile-long power line. Residents of Narrowsburg, Otisville and Callicoon-on-the-Delaware say the 120-foot-tall towers that would carry the New York Regional Interconnection (NYRI) would be eyesores and would threaten tourism in the area, according to The New York Times. NYRI supporters say it is necessary to carry surplus power from upstate to energy-hungry New York City. Several state officials support the towns’ position, but the Energy Policy Act of 2005 may put the decision in the hands of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
