New York plans to build the largest middle-income housing complex in 30 years on a 24-acre lot in Queens. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other city officials say most or all of the 5,000-unit building will be rented below market prices to families of four earning between $60,000 and $145,000 a year, according to The New York Times. The announcement of the plan comes days after Metropolitan Life agreed to sell two other, long-time affordable housing complexes to a real estate firm that might change the complexes into high-priced condos.
