New York Housing Authority tests broadband over power line technology
The Washington-based Public Technology Institute (PTI) has designated the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) an Innovation Lab for its work evaluating broadband over power line (BPL) technology. As an Innovation Lab, NYCHA will share information on its project with other government agencies.
NYCHA developed a business plan for replacing outdated building door control and intercom systems, and to upgrade security cameras in its housing developments using a BPL-based system. Results of the project can provide insight on using existing building power lines to carry signals for voice-over-Internet-Protocol intercom services, remote asset and temperature monitoring systems and residents' high-speed Internet connections.
