The New York City Council is trying to delay the multi-billion dollar sale of two Manhattan apartment complexes that are some of the city’s remaining bastions of affordable housing. The council is considering legislation that could stall Metropolitan Life’s plans to sell Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, legislation they know is not likely to actually stop the deal but could put pressure on Met Life and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to The New York Times. Residents of the two complexes and advocates for affordable housing in the city fear that the new owner of the buildings may seek to transform them into more expensive condominiums.
