Los Angeles gains ally on school board, looses some support for takeover plan

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa may now have an ally on the Los Angeles Board of Education, but he has lost some critical support in his bid to take control over that board. The mayors of six of the 27 cities in the Los Angeles Unified School District have come out against proposed legislation that would give the mayors, especially Villaraigosa, control over the selection of the district superintendent, according to the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, new board member Monica Garcia is expected to provide dissent to the board’s previously unified protest against Villaraigosa’s plan.
