A Hawaii County citizen’s group is scrambling to get enough signatures on a petition requesting another vote on an open-space preservation initiative. Currently the county cannot put more than $5 million a year into its Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Fund, but members of the Save Our Land Citizens’ Committee want 2 percent of the county’s yearly tax collections to be dedicated to the fund, a proposal the county council previously rejected, according to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. If the committee gets enough signatures to force another council vote, and if the council again rejects the proposal, then the question would be put on the ballot for the November election.
