Daley says he could have done more to prevent hiring scandal

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he could have exercised more oversight to prevent the hiring scam that led to the convictions of four of his former aides last week.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he could have exercised more oversight to prevent the hiring scam that led to the convictions of four of his former aides last week. Daley also said that he had acted “honestly and lawfully” and that the convictions and an ongoing federal investigation into his administration would have no effect on his consideration to run for re-election, according to the Chicago Tribune. Daley’s former patronage chief Robert Sorich and two other defendants were found guilty of mail fraud in connection with the scam that provided jobs and promotions to supporters of the mayor. A fourth defendant was convicted of lying to federal investigators about the case.
