California Legislature passes plan for Los Angeles mayor to take over school district

The California Legislature has approved a plan that will allow Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to essentially control the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to approve the plan. The plan will give authority over the district’s budget and contracting to the superintendent, and Villaraigosa, along with the mayors of 26 other cities in the district, will have veto power over the district board’s choice of superintendents, according to the Los Angeles Times. District officials say the plan will add too much bureaucracy and blur accountability.
