Mass deportations of illegal immigrants in New York and across the country would devastate the economy, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Republicans in Congress are touring the country and holding hearings on the planned overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws, according to The New York Times. Sen. Arlen Spector, R-Pa., who led the hearing at which Bloomberg testified, supports a plan that would allow a majority of illegal immigrants to become legal residents or citizens after paying a fine and back taxes and learning English.
