In light of the recent economic turmoil, employers are redoubling efforts to encourage employees to save money for the future by participating in retirement plans. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago joined hundreds of employers nationwide in events to recognize National Save for Retirement Week, Oct. 19-25, 2008. The district organized financial planning seminars, education sessions and social events for employees to emphasize the importance of maintaining a long-term savings outlook even in times of economic distress. As a result, 30 new employees enrolled in the district's 457 plan, administered by Washington-based ICMA-RC, and 42 employees increased their contributions.
