Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, is planning to spend about $3 million on initial planning for a new mega-prison to be built there, but it could lose the money if the state decides not to issue bonds to complete the project. The borough’s assembly has contracted with a financing company to oversee the design and construction of the $330 million prison without having signed a lease-purchase agreement with the state, according to the Anchorage Daily News. If a new governor is elected this fall, he or she might decide to kill the deal, but borough officials say that is unlikely.
