Juneau, Alaska, is coming down hard on businesses that fail to pay sales tax to the city. Though the uncollected portion of sales tax is less than 1 percent of the $35 million paid to businesses in the city each year, Juneau officials say the businesses collect the money from customers on the pretext of giving it to the city, and so the city will do what it takes to collect it, according to the Juneau Empire. Businesses that fail to pay can be charged penalties, court fees and interest up to 15 percent.
