Chicago jury told of Daley “machine”

A witness in the ongoing Chicago corruption trial testified that Mayor Richard Daley operated an election “machine” that used city workers to help the campaigns of select candidates. Former city official Donald Tomczak said workers who did well on the campaign trail often were promoted over more qualified co-workers, according to the Chicago Tribune. Tomczak was testifying in the federal corruption trial of former Daley aide Robert Sorich and three other officials, Timothy McCarthy, John Sullivan and Patrick Slattery, accused of rigging the city’s hiring process to promote the mayor’s favorites. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-0606060208jun06,1,1261014.story?coll=chi-newslocal-hed
