Acts of kindness

When Stow, Ohio, Law Director Brian Reali discovered that he would be deployed to Kuwait with the Ohio National Guard, he volunteered a portion of his paycheck to help cover the cost of additional staff during his absence. Reali will serve as a staff judge advocate for the Guard's 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, donating $20,000 of his $73,000 salary to assist his replacement, former Law Director Joe Haefner, according to The Associated Press (AP). Reali told The Akron Beacon Journal that he wanted “to minimize the negative effects as much as possible for those back home.”

Street justice

Faced with a dwindling jury pool for a January felony court case, Caledonia, Ohio, County District Court Judge Harold Eaton, Jr., ordered county sheriff's deputies to summon residents for jury duty when the pool of 34 potential jurors shrunk to an unacceptable 20. County Sheriff Michael Bergeron and three deputies stopped passersby in front of a post office, and those who were at least 18 years old and county residents were presented with a jury summons and told to immediately report to the courthouse, according to AP. “We hope it won't happen again,” Bergeron told AP.
